If you are a self-development professional: a Psychologist, a Therapist, a Life Coach, a business coach, a spiritual mentor or a Healer, you must have already come to the conclusion that having your own Non-Fiction Self-Help book available online is your number one marketing tool, as well as a good proof that you are a respectful Authority in your field. But what should you choose to write about when you have such a wealth of information, knowledge and experience? Here you will find three marvelously clever tricks with which you will be totally sure that the subject of your book as well as the entire information you will be providing is exactly what is needed to be written – so that your prospect clients will spot you, read you, follow you and will gladly approach you for further cooperation, Counseling, Therapy or Coaching.


But before we move on in explaining those three tricks, I would love to explain why It is essential to write a book with narrow, focused subject. People are looking for solutions to their problems. They are not obsessed with reading PHD Thesis. This is why when you decide to write an e-book you will choose to solve one problem at a time. In this way:

  1. You will write your book much easier and faster
  2. You will target exactly the clients you want to reach
  3. Your ideal clients will find you much easier and they will be sure that you are the expert they are looking for.

So, now that we made that clear, let’s analyze all three ways to find out what your best audience needs to read about, so that you will write it and provide it to them.


Trick #1: Ask your past, present or future clients what they need through surveys

Nothing can be more precise than the answer of your selected target audience. So, go and ask them! Sit down and write a couple of questions such as: “What is the biggest problem you are facing right now and you believe we could solve together” “If you had 1 magic wand, what would you like to change and why?” “What is your biggest concern that you would want me to help you with?” things like that. You know your clients better than me. You know better what you need to ask them. Now, how do you do the asking?

Some tips about surveys: Don’t ask too many questions. 4-5 are enough so that people won’t get too bored or feel awkward in replying for too many personal things. They do you a favor, so, respect their time.  You may give a free gift as a bribe for all the people who participate, something like a special report that can be downloaded after they press the submit button. Make clear that the survey is anonymous. Don’t ask them for their email. It should not look like a sales pitch. Your survey link can be promoted through your email list, Facebook groups, LinkedIn Connections, you may upload it on your blog, etc. –if you are willing to collect emails though mention after the submission that they can enroll in your mailing list so that they get informed when your book is published.


Trick #2:  Get focused-inspired at www. Amazon.com

Probably you might already know what you will write about – something you are an expert in, right? But you need to see how your “antagonists” have expressed themselves, and what their audience think about their work. (I put “antagonists” in quotation marks because I don’t believe in antagonism, I only support the ideas of progress and cooperation – and a successful “antagonist” of yours can easily become a Joint Venture partner in the future)  In this way you will know what to do more and what not to do at all. Go to http://www.amazon.com to the non-fiction section, keyword your preferred subject and read all the “tables of content”, the “summaries” and most important of all: the “reviews” – especially the ones that are less than three stars because those describe what could get better and what is missing.  Amazon is such a wealth of inspiration; you might get trapped reading, and reading and reading… but stay on this task for more than 3 hours – or one day the most. Otherwise, you will never start writing.

Trick #3: Find out what your prospect clients and Ideal Readers are discussing about in Online Groups

Most professionals, who try online research through groups, make a big mistake and enter online groups of their own field. If they are Psychologists, they attend psychologists’ groups, if they are Coaches they attend Coaches’ groups and so on. But this is not what you really need, unless you are looking for JV partners. If you really want to understand the heart and the mind of your prospect Reader, you should go to groups where this specific person would go. For example, if your specialty is relationships between kids and parents, you should attend parents’ groups. If your specialty is goal setting, follow some best seller authors on this subject and read what their followers comment under their posts. I guess you got the idea. So, to sum up, if you have decided to write a self-help book as a marketing tool for your practice-business, you need to do some research on what your ideal Client – patient needs to read about.  In that way, you will attract them like the bee is attracted by the honey. They will easily spot you, they will hungrily read you, they will consistently follow you and finally they will gladly approach you for further cooperation, Counseling, Therapy or Coaching.
